Eyewitness works is the refurbishment and repurposing of a grade 2 listed former cutlery works in the Devonshire quarter of Sheffield into 97 design-led apartments, duplexes and townhouses. The project is made up of 3 distinct buildings, Eyewitness works, Ceylon works and Brunswick arranged around 3 landscaped courtyards. The later, a new 6 storey concrete frame building is built on the site of the former Brunswick public house contrasting against the red brick, traditional buildings.

Working closely with our client Capital & Centric and Sheffield Planning Authority Twentysix & shedkm collaborated to design a series of apartment types all unique in layout which maximise and retain as many of the existing features as possible. Crisp free standing kitchens and bathrooms pods are inserted centrally to provide a strong contrast to the existing fabric and make best use of the space creating generous open plan living, removing unwanted circulation space and offering dual aspect layouts to maximise light.

Whilst historic features such as windows have been restored, any new windows or modifications to the structure have been treated as positive interventions adding a new layer of history to a building which has been continually modified over its lifetime.

Eyewitness works was a Housing Design Award winner 2024 and was shortlisted in the AJ Retrofit Awards and the Sheffield Design Awards.
